Research Priority Areas

We welcome research projects that align with our strategic priorities:
Strategic Priority 1: Preventing workplace injuries
Newfoundland and Labrador’s lost-time injury rate fell to a record low of 1.2 per 100 workers in 2024. We will continue to focus on preventing as many workplace injuries as possible to improve the quality of life in our province.
We welcome proposals that broaden our understanding and develop innovative solutions that:
- Help employers develop effective occupational health and safety programs
- Prevent soft-tissue (musculoskeletal) injuries in the workplace
- Prevent injuries in high-risk sectors (i.e., those with frequent or severe injuries)
- Prevent psychological injuries in the workplace, such as from harassment or violence
- Reduce exposure to workplace hazards that lead to occupational disease
Strategic Priority 2: Improving return-to-work outcomes
On average, workers are losing more time from work due to injury and claims costs are rising. Our focus is on helping workers recover and return to work sooner and safely.
We welcome proposals that broaden our understanding and develop innovative solutions that:
- Improve timely access to appropriate health care, including new treatment models
- Adapt treatment and supports for increasingly complex claims, such as psychological injuries
- Improve workplace accommodation practices
- Assess evidence-based rehabilitation for mental health and chronic pain
- Improve return-to-work outcomes through evidence-based interventions and models
