WorkplaceNL Safety Leadership Awards
Nominations are open!
The WorkplaceNL Safety Leadership Awards recognize organizations and workers who support injury prevention through leadership, implementing strong health and safety programs and safety culture in their workplace. Winners of this award will receive $1,000 – not to mention plaques and bragging rights!
The nomination period will run from May 26 to August 22, 2025.
The awards will be presented at the upcoming annual WorkplaceNL Health and Safety Learning Symposium.

WorkplaceNL’s Safety Leadership Award: Employer Award recognizes organizations that support injury prevention through leadership, implementing strong health and safety programs and safety culture in their workplace.
Applicants for the program will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Vision: Maintains and shares a safety vision that cascades to all employees.
- Leading by Example: Open to and acts on concerns from within the organization in matters of health and safety.
- Cooperation: Collaborates with employees to foster and sustain a positive and safe working environment, free from potential hazards.
- Appreciation: Recognizes employees who go above and beyond in keeping themselves and their co-workers safe.
- Action: Tracks and responds to lagging indicators and near-miss events to prevent future workplace incidents.

Eligibility
- Any business or organization with a current WorkplaceNL firm number in good standing is eligible to apply.
- Businesses or organizations not eligible to apply include those who:
- Have had a workplace fatality claim in the last five years.
- Have been convicted of an offence under the Occupational Health and Safety and/or Criminal Code of Canada within the last five years or who may be currently undergoing prosecution before the courts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act or Regulations.
- Are PRIME eligible, who do not currently participate in WorkplaceNL’s PRIME program and have not received a PRIME practice incentive refund for the last three consecutive years.
- WorkplaceNL employees are not eligible to apply or nominate.
- Previous winners are not eligible to apply for a period of five years.

WorkplaceNL’s Safety Leadership Award: Worker Award recognizes workers who support workplace injury prevention, contribute to developing and maintaining strong health and safety programs and nurture an effective safety culture in the workplace.
Applicants for the program will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Safety Culture: Continually demonstrating safe behaviors in the workplace and encouraging others to work safely.
- Leadership: Holds the safety of others in as high regard as their own.
- Continuing Education: Gains new levels of knowledge to protect workers from workplace hazards.
- Trust: Follows through on safety commitments and earns trust from their peers in areas of health and safety.
- Engagement: Takes an active role and uses resources to advocate for health and safety in the workplace.
Why Nominate a Worker?
To show a colleague or worker that you:
- Rely on their input and commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
- Appreciate that they protect the health and safety of others.
- Recognize them as a safety leader amongst their peers.
Eligibility
- The worker is currently employed with an organization located in Newfoundland and Labrador that is registered and in good standing with WorkplaceNL.
- The organization is PRIME compliant and has no outstanding orders registered with the Occupational Health and Safety Division.
- The worker has not been convicted of an offence under the Occupational Health and Safety legislation and/or Criminal Code of Canada within the last five years, or currently undergoing prosecution before the courts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act or Regulations.
- WorkplaceNL staff are not eligible to nominate or receive awards.
