WorkplaceNL honours workers who lost their lives or were injured on the job

St. John’s, NL – On April 28 each year, WorkplaceNL marks the National Day of Mourning by remembering workers who lost their lives, were injured or experienced illness due to their work.

Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 26 people lost their lives due to their work – 15 from occupational disease and 11 as a result from fatal incidents. In the past five years, 124 workers lost their lives.

On April 28, we encourage workplaces and residents to pause for a moment of silence to show your support and renew your commitment to workplace safety. You can also share a post on social media and include #DayofMourning.

“On this National Day of Mourning, my thoughts and sincere condolences are with all of those who grieve the loss of their co-workers, friends, family members and loved ones due to workplace tragedies,” said the Honourable Lisa Dempster Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “Today, as we reflect on lives lost on the job, I encourage every Newfoundlander and Labradorian to pause for remembrance and do their part to create safer and healthier workplaces across the province.”

“As we observe National Day of Mourning, we remember workers who lost their lives or suffer life-altering illness and grieve alongside their family, friends and co-workers,” said Ann Martin, CEO, WorkplaceNL. “In their honour, we renew our focus to build safer, healthier workplaces and to prevent future tragedies.”
