WorkplaceNL announces 2018 Student Safety Video/Radio Ad Contest winners

St. John’s, NL – WorkplaceNL has recognized 12 talented students for their creativity in developing young worker safety video and radio ads. The annual Student Safety Video/Radio Ad Contest, open to Grade 7-12 junior and senior high students, encourages students to share their thoughts on workplace safety as well as injury prevention.

The winners of the 2018 video category are ten members of the Villanova Junior High Media Crew, Conception Bay South: Michael Burke, Sam Collins, Nicole English, Claire Gillingham, Jacob Kavanagh, Eli Paulin, Ben Philpott, Amythest Rodgers, Alex Samson and Sera Tulk. The students share a $1,000 prize.

The winners in the 2018 radio ad category are Kira Clarke and Rebecca Warren of Crescent Collegiate, South Dildo. They share a $1,000 prize. Their radio ad will be aired on stations across the province.

“I offer my sincerest congratulations to the students,” said the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “We must continuously focus on creating a culture of safety in Newfoundland and Labrador, and our youth are integral to the process.”

Young workers, aged 15-24 years, continue to lead the province in reducing workplace injuries. For the second year in a row, youth reported 1.3 lost-time incidents per 100 workers in 2017, lower than the provincial rate of 1.5.

“I congratulate this group of safety-minded students for working together to create a video and radio ad to help all workers build a strong safety culture in our province,” said Dennis Hogan, CEO, WorkplaceNL. “Our 2018-2022 prevention strategy recognizes that all safety partners must collaborate to prevent workplace injury and tragedy. These students are leading by example, in working in partnership and creating awareness of workplace safety.”

WorkplaceNL will continue to invest in programs that engage youth to become more aware of workplace safety and injury prevention.
