Each year, WorkplaceNL observes the National Day of Mourning to remember workers who were injured or lost their lives because of their job.
The day was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991. Since then, the Day of Mourning has grown to be observed in about 100 countries around the world.
In 2025, WorkplaceNL accepted 17 claims for work-related fatalities. 14 were due to occupational disease and 3 were the result of fatal incidents. Over the past five years, 106 workers in Newfoundland and Labrador have tragically lost their lives because of workplace incidents or occupational disease.
These losses have a devastating impact on families, coworkers, employers and communities. They should also serve as a powerful reminder that every workplace fatality is preventable and that we all share responsibility for keeping one another safe.
On this year’s Day of Mourning, we encourage you to keep health and safety top of mind, both at work and at home. By working together and watching out for one another, we can help ensure every worker returns home safely to their loved ones at the end of the day.
