Supervisor Safety Certification Training Standard

Supervisors play a huge role in preventing workplace injuries and for that reason supervisors need to know their roles and responsibilities in relation to regulatory OHS requirements.

On February 2, 2015, WorkplaceNL introduced a new voluntary certification training standard for Supervisor Health and Safety. This standard provides minimum criteria for the development and delivery of a supervisor health and safety certification training program.

This voluntary certification
training standard applies to:
  • A person who meets the definition
    of supervisor under Section 2
    of the Newfoundland and Labrador
    Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  • An employer who employs a person
    as a supervisor.

  • A person who is delivering a supervisor
health and safety certification training program.
Training must be renewed every three (3) years to maintain certification

It is the intention of WorkplaceNL to provide flexibility regarding worker recertification. To that end, we will be developing a recertification course that will be available via the Certification Training Registry (CTR). It is our intention to have this course available by the first week of January 2020.

Training is available province-wide

Supervisor Health and Safety Certification training is available province-wide from approved training providers. Please refer to the marketplace of the Certification Training Registry (CTR) for a complete listing of approved training providers.

Trainers and Training Providers

Registering as an approved training provider

Only training providers/trainers approved by WorkplaceNL may offer and deliver Supervisor Health and Safety Certification training. This applies to private consultants as well as firms providing in-house training for their own staff.

The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act requires all employers performing work (directly or through a contract) in Newfoundland and Labrador to register with WorkplaceNL. All certified training providers who employ workers or contract work must be in compliance with the registration, reporting and payment requirements of WorkplaceNL. Training providers will be checked for compliance with these requirements and those who do not comply will be denied certification as a training provider.

Training providers and trainers must register with WorkplaceNL to become approved under the Supervisor Health and Safety Certification training standard. A copy of this standard is available on our website.

Please complete and submit the Trainer Registration Form. Please read the form carefully and complete both pages in full, then forward it, along with supporting documentation, to the address provided on the form or email

Required qualifications for trainers

The following is the minimum criteria to be considered for supervisor health and safety trainers:
a) High School Diploma or equivalence.
